General Questions

Understanding the basics of web presence.

What does web hosting entail?

Website hosting involves securing space on a server to store your site’s files, ensuring it is accessible on the internet at all times. It’s a necessary service for the visibility of any website. The cost of hosting is incorporated into the monthly fee for your website package.

What is SSL and why is it important for my website?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security protocol that encrypts data exchanged between a user’s browser and a website, ensuring that sensitive information like personal details and payment information is transmitted securely. It’s crucial for protecting your users’ data, improving trust in your website, and enhancing your site’s SEO rankings, as search engines favor secure websites.

What is the difference between a domain name and web hosting?
A domain name is the web address that users type into their browser to find your website, like www.mycompany.co.uk. Web hosting, on the other hand, is the service that allows your website to be accessible on the Internet. It involves renting space on a server where your website’s files are stored. Both are essential for a website to be accessible online.
How can I improve my website's search engine ranking?

Improving your website’s search engine ranking involves several strategies, including optimising your site’s content for relevant keywords, ensuring your website is mobile-friendly, improving page loading times, and securing your site with SSL. All of our packages provide this out the box. Additionally regularly updating your content, acquiring backlinks from reputable sites, and ensuring a good user experience can also significantly impact your rankings.

Why is website speed important, and how can it be improved?

Website speed is crucial for user experience and search engine rankings. Faster websites reduce bounce rates and encourage visitors to explore more pages, which can lead to increased engagement and conversions. To improve website speed we optimise image sizes, leverage browser caching, minimize HTTP requests, and use a content delivery network (CDN) to reduce the distance between the servers and the user. The result is a fast responsive experience for your visitors.

What are the key features of a mobile-friendly website?

A mobile-friendly website should have a responsive design that adjusts seamlessly to fit the screen size of any device, easy-to-use navigation, fast loading times, and touch-friendly buttons and links. It should also have readable text without needing to zoom and accessible menus to ensure a good user experience on mobile devices. We ensure your site looks as good on mobile as it does on desktop.

How often should I update my website's content?

The frequency of updates depends on your industry, the nature of your website, and your goals. However, regularly updating your website with fresh, relevant content can improve your search engine rankings and keep your audience engaged. For blogs, updating once a week can be effective, while core website pages might require less frequent updates, unless there’s new information to add or changes in your business offerings.

Technology and Design Choices

Behind the scenes: Our technology stack explained.

Wordpress: What is it and why do we use it?

WordPress is a versatile and powerful content management system (CMS) that powers a significant portion of the internet. It offers unparalleled flexibility, a vast ecosystem of themes and plugins, and the capability for custom development. Using WordPress allows us to create bespoke websites tailored to your specific needs and objectives, ensuring your site stands out and functions exactly as you require.

The advantage of LiteSpeed hosting servers

Lightspeed hosting servers provide exceptional performance and speed for WordPress websites, enhancing the user experience through faster loading times. This speed is crucial for SEO, user engagement, and conversion rates. Lightspeed’s advanced caching capabilities also reduce the load on the server, ensuring your site remains fast and responsive even during traffic spikes.

The benefits of using a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A CDN significantly improves website speed and availability by caching content at multiple locations around the world. This means that regardless of where your users are, they receive data from the closest server, reducing latency and speeding up content delivery. A CDN also helps protect your site from DDoS attacks and sudden traffic surges, maintaining availability and security.

Wix and Squarespace vs. a professional designer: A cost and customisation comparison

Wix and Squarespace offer user-friendly platforms for building websites without extensive technical knowledge. However, when comparing the ongoing monthly costs associated with these platforms to a bespoke design service, the expenses are quite similar over time. The key difference lies in customisation and personalisation. A professional designer provides a tailored website that precisely fits your business identity, needs, and functionality requirements, which template-based platforms can’t match. This bespoke approach enhances your brand’s online presence and caters to specific customer interactions, setting you apart from competitors.

Shopify for E-commerce: Why a custom design approach enhances your site

While Shopify is a popular platform for launching e-commerce sites due to its ease of use and integrated features, it operates within a closed environment that can limit your control over SEO and site customisation. This restriction can hinder your site’s ability to rank highly in search engine results. Opting for a custom-designed e-commerce site on WordPress, for instance, offers the freedom to implement SEO best practices, tailor your site’s functionality and appearance to your exact requirements, and avoid the limitations imposed by a proprietary platform. In the long run, this approach fosters a stronger brand identity and a more engaging user experience, potentially leading to better conversion rates and customer loyalty.

The value of professional design in a DIY age

In today’s digital landscape, DIY website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Shopify make it seem easy to create a website. However, the value of a professional designer cannot be overstated. A designer offers more than just a unique website; they bring expertise in user experience, SEO strategies, and custom functionalities that DIY platforms cannot fully provide. This tailored approach ensures your website not only stands out aesthetically but also performs optimally in search engines and meets the specific needs of your target audience. Ultimately, investing in professional design services results in a sophisticated, bespoke website that reflects your brand’s ethos and appeals directly to your customers, distinguishing your business in a crowded online marketplace.

Website Packages

Tailored web solutions: Package details and options.

Is a bespoke www.companyname.co.uk domain included with my website?

Indeed, every package we offer comes with a bespoke domain registration. We can secure a .co.uk contingent on availability. Should you desire a domain with a different extension, it’s possible, although additional charges may apply due to varying registration costs, which could slightly increase your monthly fee.

Is a custom email address part of my website package?
Indeed, every package we offer comes with a custom email address tailored to your domain, such as something@mycompany.co.uk. The quantity of email accounts provided differs across our various website packages. Should you require additional email accounts, they can be added for an extra monthly charge. Opting for a package that closely matches your email account needs from the start is generally more cost-effective.
Can I retain my current web and email addresses when switching to your service?

Yes, should you already possess a web address and email address, it’s possible to continue using them with your new website. We will initially construct your site using a temporary address. Upon completion and your readiness to launch, we will undertake the necessary adjustments to redirect your existing addresses to the new site.

What is the limit on website pages included in my package?

Your selected website package determines the initial quantity of designed pages included in your site’s construction. For additional designed pages beyond this limit, there is a single charge of £36 plus VAT per page. Opting for a more comprehensive package initially often proves more cost-effective than acquiring extra pages individually.

What is the recommended number of pages for my website?

The appropriate number of pages for your website can vary significantly, as it depends on the unique needs and structure of your business. While there is no mandatory page count, typical expectations for a website include a homepage, an “About Us” page, a section detailing your products or services, and a contact page. For enhanced visibility and search engine ranking, consider creating individual pages for each product or service you offer.

Do you utilise pre-made design templates?

We do not employ pre-made design templates. When you commission a website through us, it will be designed from scratch to meet your specific requirements. Our approach ensures that each website is a unique creation, tailored to the client’s needs. Once your website is live, you will have full control to manage and update it via the Website Editor.

Design Process

Crafting your vision: Our step-by-step design journey.

How do we understand your website vision and requirements?

To capture your specific needs and preferences for your website, we employ a comprehensive brand insight survey. This essential tool allows us to gather detailed information directly from you, ensuring we align with your vision from the outset. Through this survey, we delve into various aspects such as the specific pages you envision for your site, the content that should populate those pages, preferred colour schemes, and the nature of your industry. We also explore design inspirations you admire. Additionally, we inquire about functionality requirements, target audience characteristics, desired user experience, and any particular technologies or tools you wish to integrate. This thorough approach ensures we have a holistic understanding of your expectations and can create a website that truly represents your brand and meets your objectives.

What does the website creation process involve?

The website creation process is designed to be straightforward and efficient. Initially, we request a 50% non-refundable deposit to commence your project. Following receipt of the deposit, we arrange a session to complete the brand insight survey with you, allowing us to gain a comprehensive understanding of your business and design preferences.

Subsequently, we begin developing the initial draft of your website on a temporary web address, typically within 5 to 10 working days after finalising the survey. This draft is a fully functional version of your website, ready for you to review and suggest any modifications you deem necessary. We are committed to refining the design based on your feedback until you are completely satisfied.

After you approve the design, the next step is the pre-live or live phase. During the pre-live stage, you have the opportunity to make final adjustments to the content yourself. Before transitioning to this stage or going live, we require settlement of any remaining balance. Upon payment, we provide you with the login credentials for the Website Editor, enabling you to make any last-minute changes.

Once you’re ready and confirm, we finalise the process by publishing your website live on your chosen web address, marking the completion of the project and the beginning of your new online presence.

What is the timeframe for creating my website?

After we receive your detailed brand insight survey responses, the initial design and development of your website’s first draft is typically completed within 5-10 working days. In cases where Logo Design is part of your package, we aim to finalise it within the first 5 working days. The overall timeline can vary based on the number of revisions required for your designs. To minimise the need for multiple amendments, we advise dedicating ample time to filling out your brand insight survey, ensuring you provide comprehensive information for our design team.

What happens if I'm not satisfied with the initial design?

Our brand insight survey is a key tool in understanding your preferences and requirements, ensuring we are aligned with your vision for the new website. However, it’s understood that the first draft might not always immediately meet your expectations. There’s no need for concern if this occurs; the initial draft serves as a starting point for further refinement. We anticipate the need for revisions and are prepared to make adjustments to align with your satisfaction. Our commitment is to work diligently until you are pleased with the outcome. We do request that any feedback remains within the scope of what was initially discussed in the brand insight survey and that communication is constructive. Together, we will address and resolve any concerns to ensure your website meets your standards and expectations.

How involved do I need to be in the website design process?

Your involvement in the design process is primarily shaped by how detailed you are in completing the brand insight survey. This survey lays the groundwork by capturing your brand essence, design preferences, and site functionalities, significantly steering the initial design direction. A thorough completion of this survey minimises the need for constant back-and-forth, making your role more about providing specific feedback on drafts and finalising the design. Essentially, the depth of information you provide upfront through the survey directly correlates to a smoother design process, requiring less effort from you beyond key feedback moments.

If I'm not tech-savvy, can I still get support?

Absolutely, we provide support from 9am to 5pm GMT, Monday through Friday, accessible via telephone or email for any assistance or questions you may have. For inquiries outside of these hours, we monitor emails for urgent matters, ensuring that you’ll receive a prompt response as soon as we’re back in the office. Our goal is to ensure you feel fully supported throughout your experience with us, regardless of your level of technical expertise

Can I host my website with a different provider after you build it?

We generally advise against hosting your website with an external provider once we’ve built it. Our bespoke websites are intricately designed with our content management system, meaning your monthly fee encompasses not just hosting, but also backups, feature updates, and more, ensuring your website operates smoothly. While you’re with us, you’ll have access to our content manager, a crucial tool for your site’s maintenance and content updates. If you decide to move away from our services, you can retain the design, but the functional aspects tied to our systems—like certain dynamic features and integrations—won’t be transferable. Additionally, we do not offer building or editing services for websites hosted outside our ecosystem, as our support and infrastructure are tailored specifically to sites hosted on our platform.

Payments and Billing

Investing in your online presence: Billing and payment simplified.

What does the initial payment cover, considering there's also a monthly fee?

The initial payment primarily covers the costs of designing and building your website, involving detailed work to tailor your site according to your specific needs and preferences.

Meanwhile, the monthly fee addresses the ongoing necessities for your website’s operation and support. This includes hosting to keep your site live, alongside continuous assistance for security, domain, and email queries, ensuring your online presence is secure, reliable, and effectively managed.

Why do I need to pay an ongoing fee for my website?

Maintaining a website involves several recurring costs, and we strive to be upfront and transparent about these from the start to avoid any surprises down the line. The ongoing monthly fee for your website includes several critical services to ensure your site remains operational, secure, and up-to-date. This fee covers the cost of hosting your website on our servers, providing you with continuous support for any queries or issues that arise. It also includes the renewal fees for your website’s domain name, comprehensive security measures to protect your site and data, and regular updates. These updates ensure your website remains compatible with the latest technologies and standards, offering an optimal experience for your visitors.

Why is there a monthly fee before my website goes live?

The monthly fee covers the hosting space that your website uses from the beginning of its development process. Although your website may not be live immediately, the hosting space is essential for the setup and construction phase of your site. In most scenarios, your website will be launched before the first monthly fee is due, aligning the commencement of your billing cycle with the live status of your website. However, for larger sites with more complex requirements, the build time may extend beyond this period. In such rare cases, the monthly fee ensures that your project continues to have the necessary resources and support for completion.

Will there be any hidden fees appearing in the future?

Certainly not. We ensure transparency in all our pricing and fees from the outset. All ongoing costs associated with your service are clearly outlined during the signup process, and this approach extends to any additional services you might choose to add later on. Should there be any extra fees associated with new services in the future, these will be fully explained at the time of addition. Our commitment is to maintain clarity and honesty in all our billing practices, so you can plan your expenses without worrying about unexpected charges.

Am I bound by a long-term contract?

No, you’re not locked into an ongoing contract with us. You can cancel your website service at any time, provided you give us a 7-day notice before your next invoice date. This notice allows us to prevent your package from renewing automatically. After cancellation, your website will continue to be live until the end of the current paid period, offering you ample time to manage the transition before your site goes offline.

Is it possible to cancel my website project during the build phase?

Yes, you have the option to cancel your website project at any stage during the build process. However, the financial implications of cancellation depend on the timing. If you decide to cancel after we’ve delivered your first draft, you’ll be required to settle the remaining balance of the website build, which typically amounts to the remaining 50% of the project cost. On the other hand, if you choose to cancel before we’ve produced the first draft, you will forfeit your initial 50% deposit but will not be obligated to pay the remaining balance.

What is the policy if I decide to cancel or close my account?

What is the policy if I decide to cancel or close my account?

Should you decide to part ways with us, we understand and aim to make the closure process as smooth as possible. To initiate the cancellation, simply reach out to us through your preferred method: email us at goodbye@tartanrobot.com, give us a call at 07960 915 153, or use our live chat feature.

We request that you provide us with a 7-day notice before your upcoming monthly fee is due, to ensure a seamless transition. During this process, we’ll work with you to set a specific closure date, and your account will officially close on that agreed date.

If circumstances change and you wish to return, reactivating your account and website is typically possible. A small reactivation fee applies, but we’re here to help you get back online whenever you’re ready.

Can I transfer my domain if I decide to leave?

Yes, you can transfer your domain to another provider if you decide to leave our services. To initiate a domain transfer, please contact us with your request. We will provide you with the necessary authorisation code and instructions to facilitate the transfer process. Keep in mind, domain transfers typically require a specific timeframe to complete, based on registrar policies. We recommend starting this process well in advance of your planned departure to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, any domain registered through us remains yours, and we’re committed to supporting your transfer request in any way we can.
